Finding treatises

There are several ways to locate legal treatises:

  1. Use this research guide for librarian-recommended treatises in many areas of law
  2. Do a keyword or subject search in Hollis, Hollis Classic, or another library's catalogue. Use the expanded search or facets to limit your search to the law school library.
  3. Ask a research librarian to help you locate additional treatises on your topic
  4. Consult reference sources that review treatises, such as:

Introduction

If you need to find a book on a particular legal topic, this guide to legal treatises will provide you with some of the most important titles in each subject.

To find more titles in the HOLLIS catalogue, click through to an individual title, then click the relevant subject heading links.

You can also browse books in the Reading Room on the 4th floor of Langdell Hall, but keep in mind that some treatises are now only available online, and some of our collection is housed offsite at the Harvard Depository and is only findable through HOLLIS. Most treatises at the Depository are no longer updated.

Where available, it is noted if the treatise is available on Lexis and/or Westlaw. Please keep in mind that this availability may change without notice. To find a title, use the Find Sources function in Lexis, the Directory in Westlaw Classic, and just start typing the title in the search box in WestlawNext.

For more about finding and using treatises, see the treatises section of the HLS Library guide to secondary sources.

If you can't find what you're looking for, remember to ask a librarian!
